How To Care For Roses

Roses are one of the most popular flowers to give as a gift – probably because of how unique and beautiful they are. However, they don’t just magically appear at your florist. They have to be well-maintained and cared for. While roses are not horrible hard to care for, they do require attention. Here are some ways to maintain roses:

Spring:
Spring will be your busiest time with your roses. Once you see new buds starting to sprout, make sure to prune the bushes. Remove any dead or damaged parts of the plant first. There should only be a handful of stems left or the plant is more prone to being overcrowded. As the roses grow, be sure to apply fertilizer. Granular food in the soil works best so you can just put it in and not have to worry about using liquid fertilizer every couple of weeks.

For watering, make sure that your rose gets around an inch a week. If you have a pretty steady rain in your area, your rose bushes should be fine. If you do have to water, make sure it’s not when the sun is shining brightly on the rose. This could burn your plant.

Summer:
When the hot summer months hit, be sure to trim any dead roses from the bush, this will help the plant grow more blooms. Mix some fertilizer into the soil to help rid off any diseases that the plant may become prone to.

Fall:
Before the winter hits, you should stop fertilizing the roses or they will continue to try and bloom when the weather is much too cold for them. Also, if the weather gets very cold where you are during the winter, consider wrapping the bushes in hessian (sack cloth)
